A Tribute to Matt Corker (aka BRO!)

Dear Friends…

Let me introduce to you the man of the hour, the man of the month, the man most call Corker and I call BRO….

…on the side of Highway 1 on Vancouver Island!
I had a crazy idea that cycling to Jordan River for a cookie would be fun and what better company than Bro for an adventure! (I think we owe it to Pops for injecting the sense of “crazy” into our blood!) As per always, Bro accepts an invitation for anything remotely crazy with a huge smile and is absolutely committed to having fun. Gotta love this guy!
So after an early morning start, we take our first break at this point:
I guess I should also mention that it was at this point that I realized I had mis-read google maps (that is what happens when you are used to traveling via a fabulous GPS – more on that later!) and our destination was in fact 50-60km away. Yikes! Change of plans…destination Sooke for lunch instead.
So we made it Sooke, Bro was ravenous and I wasn’t certain he was having as much fun. Yikes x2!!
The best part was when he started to tell me how committed he is to being positive…the power of positive thinking…the ability to do absolutely anything when you want it bad enough…and have a smile on your face!
We grab some calories in Sooke and an ice cream cone (obviously!) and hit the grassy park before returning back to the ferry. Bro informed me that he was a little sore, so we may need to take a few pit stops for ju-jubes en route back, but that would have happened anyway, so no biggie!
But this was definitely the highlight of my day:

km100 we stop dead in our tracks on the side of the highway! This was a photo opp indeed! Not only was this Bro’s first Century Ride, but in fact when the odometer read 41.88km that was his longest ride ever. I had NO clue! (and just for the record, if you have never been on a bike before, riding 30km is very different than riding 100km!)

So in the beautiful sunshine, on beautiful Vancouver Island, with a smile all over his face (at least whenever he was within my eye-shot), Bro did something he had never done before!

But that is nothing new. And THAT my friends, is the beauty of Matt Corker! There is absolutely nothing that he won’t accomplish if he wants it bad enough. He will run a marathon on little training, but finish with a smile. He will ride 120km and give me advice on positive thoughts along the way. He is a force to reckon with, determined to drive change and leave this world just that much better. He is an inspiration, a motivation, a leader and good friend to many…but only I am so lucky to be his sister!

“I only want people around me who can do the impossible.”

- Elizabeth Arden

On this special day of celebration, my birthday wish for you is to only be around those kind of people! Thank you for being one of them in my life. Love You Bro!

  1. I do believe it was YOU who taught me that “impossible is nothing.” When you set your mind to it, you can do anything… even ride 116 km for a good cookie!

I think this also confirms that we are crazy…fyi.
